A place where play meets healing, Red Oaks Coping is a haven for children and families facing medical challenges, grief, and life's hardest moments. Red Oaks is where your child can find the tools, support, and compassion they need to cope, heal, and thrive.
Red Oaks Coping was founded in 2021 by Jenn Schaefer, with over 13 years of experience in child development, play therapy, and mental health. She brings her clinical expertise and personal journey as a childhood cancer survivor to her child life private practice.
"My daughter was 4 years old and needed an IV to start her medication. Mrs. Jenn walked into the room with a stuffed bear and IV supplies and walked my daughter through the entire process using the stuffed bear. My daughter was part of the process and because she knew what would happen and why, the IV didn't bother her at all. She didn't shed 1 tear when it was time to get her IV started. We forget that the unknown breeds fear. If we pause for education, we will always see a decrease in traumatic experiences. Mrs. Jenn taught my daughter and myself so much that day. My now 6 year old daughter ASKS for an IV sometimes. Mrs. Jenn is amazing at what she does."

Red Oaks Coping LLC is Lafayette, Louisiana's trusted provider of child life services, child counseling, and therapeutic support for children, teens, and families in Acadiana. Led by Jenn Schaefer, MA, LPC, CCLS — a dual-certified Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Child Life Specialist — Red Oaks Coping offers medical play therapy, procedure preparation, grief and loss support, diagnosis education, sibling support, and parent coaching to families across Lafayette, Acadia, Iberia, St. Landry, St. Martin, and Vermilion parishes. Jenn also provides child counseling for anxiety, autism, medical trauma, emotional regulation, and chronic illness for children ages 2–17, as well as the evidence-based Wonders & Worries program for children of parents facing serious illness. Additional services include workshops, school consulting, healthcare professional training, and mentorship for child life students. Virtual sessions are available statewide.
