Child Life Services
Child Life Services are specialized, therapeutic supports provided by Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS), designed to focus on the emotional, social and developmental needs of children and families facing illness, injury, trauma and loss. They aim to minimize fears and anxiety through play, education and preparation.
Grief & Loss Support
Grief can be confusing for children and adolescents, and they often process loss differently than adults. Through supportive conversations and therapeutic play, we help children understand their feelings, navigate their grief, and begin to find a path forward.
Diagnosis Education
Understanding is power. If your child or family member has been given a medical diagnosis, we provide age-appropriate education to aid in increase their understanding and guide them through coping with life changes the diagnosis may bring..
Procedure Preparation
& Support
Medical procedures can feel overwhelming for children. Through age-appropriate education, play, and preparation, we help children understand what to expect before, during, and after medical procedures. This support helps reduce fear, build confidence, and improve coping.

Q: Where does healing happen?
Jenn provides virtual or in-person (at her location or in your home) services. She serves families located in Lafayette, Acadia, Iberia, At. Landry, St. Martin and Vermillion parishes. Virtual support is provided to families living in other areas.

"Coleman had his annual cardiology appointment yesterday. He's done fine in the past but last year, he was extremely stressed and uncooperative during the EKG and other tests. His anxiety was through the roof so he fought any attempt to comfort him and kept trying to elope. Jennifer scheduled a time to meet with Coleman and address his specific fears. She had various medical related toys for him to pretend play and manipulate at the beginning of the session. He was also given a social story explaining the test in a way he could understand. They then practiced the EKG on a doll so he could see what would happen. She sent us home with a toolkit and tons of ideas of how to make the appointment as stress free as possible. Needless to say, Coleman rocked the appointment! He was so brave and patient throughout all of the tests...Jennifer was such a blessing, and I recommend her services to everyone!"

Led by Jenn Schaefer, MA, LPC, CCLS — a dual-certified Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Child Life Specialist — Red Oaks Coping offers medical play therapy, procedure preparation, grief and loss support, diagnosis education, sibling support, and parent coaching to families across Lafayette, Acadia, Iberia, St. Landry, St. Martin, and Vermilion parishes. Jenn also provides child counseling for anxiety, autism, medical trauma, emotional regulation, and chronic illness for children ages 2–17, as well as the evidence-based Wonders & Worries program for children of parents facing serious illness. Additional services include workshops, school consulting, healthcare professional training, and mentorship for child life students. Virtual sessions are available statewide.
